This art comes from musicians, painters and singers, called Chitrakattis to illustrate the great epics of Hindu mythology that were then told . Its particularity is that it is painted only with vegetable dyes, using a Kalam (cut bamboo) with a cloth serving as a tank on a woven cotton canvas. In Sanskrit, Kalam means "pen" and Kari means "art". The Manjishta root known for its therapeutic virtues in Ayurvedic medicine is a climbing plant called Madder. "Manjishta" means bright red in Sanskrit. It gives a multitude of reds, including orange and pink. The color given depends on the age of the plant, its fiber content and the mineral content of the water used to dye. Indian indigo, a shrub that gives the color indigo blue, is often referred to as the "seventh color" of the rainbow since Isaac Newton. Indigo also historically represents the color of freedom in India.
